Why get this before calling a specialist

A cross-border tax adviser or immigration lawyer can charge $3,000–$10,000+ to handle a move — and you often pay before you even understand what you actually need. This playbook gives you the full sequence first, so you:

  • Walk into any specialist conversation knowing exactly what to ask and prepare.
  • Do the steps you can handle yourself — and only pay for the ones you can't.
  • Avoid the expensive ordering mistakes (a non-qualifying pension transfer, or realising gains at the wrong time) that specialists can't undo after the fact.

It's not a substitute for advice on your specific situation — it's the map that makes that advice faster, cheaper, and far less stressful.

1 · Decide & qualify

Weeks 1–4

Two routes in: the points-based Skilled Migrant Category, or an employer-backed AEWV. Confirm which fits.

  1. 1

Choose your route: SMC vs AEWV

    DIY — but double-check

Decide between the Skilled Migrant Category (points-based residence) and the Accredited Employer Work Visa (job-offer-led, often a faster first step). As a UK citizen you're exempt from the English test.

Why it matters: The two routes have different timelines and costs — picking the right one first avoids wasted fees.

⚠ Pitfall: Assuming any job offer works for AEWV — the employer must hold accreditation with Immigration New Zealand.

💡 Tip: Many people land on an AEWV and transition to residence later; check your occupation against the Green List for faster routes.

  2. 2

Score your SMC points (if going for residence)

    DIY — but double-check

Tally points from skilled employment, qualifications and experience against the current SMC threshold.

⚠ Pitfall: Self-assessing without the qualification recognition that actually feeds your points.

  3. 3

Get your qualifications recognised if needed

    Do it yourself

Some occupations need an International Qualifications Assessment (IQA) or registration with a NZ professional body.

💡 Tip: Start registration early for regulated professions (health, engineering, teaching) — it's the long pole.
