Why get this before calling a specialist

A cross-border tax adviser or immigration lawyer can charge $3,000–$10,000+ to handle a move — and you often pay before you even understand what you actually need. This playbook gives you the full sequence first, so you:

  • Walk into any specialist conversation knowing exactly what to ask and prepare.
  • Do the steps you can handle yourself — and only pay for the ones you can't.
  • Avoid the expensive ordering mistakes (a non-qualifying pension transfer, or realising gains at the wrong time) that specialists can't undo after the fact.

It's not a substitute for advice on your specific situation — it's the map that makes that advice faster, cheaper, and far less stressful.

1 · Decide & qualify

Weeks 1–6

Express Entry is points-based and needs no job offer — but you must sit a language test (yes, even as a Brit) and prove funds.

  1. 1

Build your Express Entry profile & CRS score

    DIY — but double-check

Calculate your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score across age, education, language and experience, and compare to recent draw cut-offs.

Why it matters: Only profiles above the draw cut-off get an Invitation to Apply — your score is everything.

⚠ Pitfall: Counting on a self-assessed score without the official language test and credential assessment that actually feed it.

💡 Tip: French ability can add a large CRS boost via category-based draws — worth it if you have any.

  2. 2

Sit an approved English test (mandatory)

    Do it yourself

Canada requires an approved English test (IELTS/CELPIP) even for native speakers — results feed directly into your CRS score.

⚠ Pitfall: Skipping it because English is your first language. There's no native-speaker exemption; no test, no score.

💡 Tip: Even one band higher can move you above a draw cut-off — it's often worth re-sitting.

  3. 3

Get your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

    Do it yourself

Have your UK qualifications assessed for Canadian equivalence by a designated organisation.

⚠ Pitfall: ECAs take weeks — run this and the language test in parallel, not in sequence.
