Australia vs USA vs Canada vs New Zealand: where should Brits emigrate?
An honest comparison on cost, difficulty, timeline and what happens to your pension.
There's no single 'best' destination — it depends on your job, family and risk appetite. But the four most common routes for Britons differ in predictable ways. Here's the honest version.
Australia 🇦🇺 — the points-test classic
The number-one destination for British emigrants. As a UK citizen you skip the English test, and demand for skilled workers is strong, but the points-tested visas and full family visa charges are substantial. Pension transfers are heavily restricted.
New Zealand 🇳🇿 — workable pensions, slower pace
Smaller and further, but a long-standing favourite. The Skilled Migrant Category is points-based, you're exempt from the English test, and crucially NZ has QROPS schemes plus a ~4-year tax window — the friendliest corridor for moving a UK pension.
Canada 🇨🇦 — no job offer needed, but prove your funds
Express Entry is points-based and doesn't require a job offer. Two catches for Brits: Canada still requires an approved English test even from native speakers, and you must prove settlement funds. There's no QROPS route, so the pension stays in the UK.
United States 🇺🇸 — highest reward, hardest path
The most variable route: most Britons arrive via an employer (work visa to green card), family or marriage. Costs and timelines swing widely, and US worldwide-income tax plus FBAR/FATCA reporting add real complexity. No QROPS into US retirement accounts.

The thing they share
All require you to think about your UK residence position under the SRT, and in most cases the smart pension move is to leave it in a UK SIPP. Sort the money plan early regardless of destination.
Frequently asked
Which country is easiest to emigrate to from the UK?
Australia and New Zealand are well-established, English-test-exempt routes for Britons. Canada's Express Entry is accessible without a job offer but needs proof of funds and a language test. The US is generally the hardest and most variable.
Where can I take my UK pension with me?
New Zealand is the most workable of the four (QROPS schemes plus a transitional tax window). Australia is heavily restricted, and the US and Canada have no QROPS route — there you'd typically leave the pension in the UK.
