UK visa requirements for South African teachers (2026)

Teaching is a sponsorable Skilled Worker route — here's what you actually need.

Teaching is one of the more achievable UK routes for South Africans, because schools and multi-academy trusts can sponsor Skilled Worker visas and teacher shortages are real. But 'achievable' still means clearing several specific requirements. Here's the honest checklist.

1. You need a job with a licensed sponsor

The Skilled Worker visa requires a job offer from a UK employer that holds a sponsor licence. Many schools and academy trusts are licensed sponsors — but not all are, so filter your search to those that are.

Check whether a school or trust appears on the UK's public register of licensed sponsors before banking on an offer. Verify the current rules at gov.uk/skilled-worker-visa.

2. The role must meet the salary and skill thresholds

The job must be an eligible occupation (teaching roles generally are) and meet both the general salary threshold and the going rate for the role. Thresholds change, so confirm the current figures rather than relying on an old number.

3. Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

To teach in many state schools you'll need, or need to work towards, Qualified Teacher Status. South African qualifications and experience can count, but you may need to apply for QTS recognition. Independent schools have more flexibility.

  • Check whether your subject is in shortage — shortage subjects (e.g. maths, sciences, languages) are often easier to place.
  • Gather your SACE registration, degree, PGCE/teaching qualification and reference letters.
  • Ask the school whether they support QTS recognition and the visa paperwork.

4. English, TB test and the IHS

As a South African applicant you'll typically need to show English (a South African degree taught in English can often satisfy this via Ecctis), complete a TB test from an approved clinic, and pay the Immigration Health Surcharge upfront for the whole visa for each family member.

5. The money side doesn't disappear

Beyond the visa, you still need to plan ceasing SA tax residency, your retirement annuity and moving funds. Budget the full move with the estimator, and use the readiness quiz to see how prepared you are.

Frequently asked

Can South African teachers get a UK Skilled Worker visa?

Yes — teaching is generally an eligible occupation and many schools and academy trusts are licensed sponsors. You need a job offer from a licensed sponsor that meets the salary and skill thresholds, plus English, a TB test and the Immigration Health Surcharge. Verify current thresholds on gov.uk.

Do I need QTS to teach in the UK as a South African?

For many state schools, yes — or you'll need to work towards Qualified Teacher Status, with recognition of your South African qualifications. Independent schools have more flexibility. Confirm with the specific school and the current QTS rules.
