Let's be honest about what this is
We'd rather you skip this than buy the wrong thing. So here's the straight version:
This is for you if…
- ✓ You're seriously planning a move to United Kingdom (roughly within the next 18 months).
- ✓ You want the money & tax steps in the right order, with the pitfalls flagged before you hit them.
- ✓ You'd rather do what you can yourself and only pay specialists for what you genuinely must.
It's NOT for you if…
- ✕ You want someone to do your visa paperwork — we don't (we tell you who can).
- ✕ You're after a shortcut or a way around the rules — there isn't one here.
- ✕ You need personalised legal, tax or migration advice — this is an educational plan, not advice.
Every figure links to its official source and is dated. When the rules change, we update it — accuracy is the whole point.
1 · Decide & qualify
Weeks 1–4Australians have several UK routes — pick the right one before spending a cent.
- 1
Choose your route
DIY — but double-checkUK Ancestry (a grandparent born in the UK — 5 years' work rights, no sponsor), Youth Mobility (under 31), or a sponsored Skilled Worker visa. Ancestry is usually the best if you qualify.
Why it matters: Each route has different eligibility, cost and rights — the wrong one wastes time and money.
⚠ Pitfall: Not realising you qualify for Ancestry; many Australians have a UK-born grandparent and default to Skilled Worker needlessly.
💡 Tip: If you're under 31 and don't have the ancestry, Youth Mobility is fast and flexible.

Gather your evidence early
Do it yourselfFor Ancestry, you must prove the chain: your birth certificate → your parent's → your UK-born grandparent's. Order originals now — they're the long pole.
⚠ Pitfall: Missing or mismatched names on old certificates; fix these before you apply.
- 3
Confirm work/salary requirements (if Skilled Worker)
DIY — but double-checkIf going the sponsored route, confirm the employer holds a licence and the role clears the salary thresholds.
Documents to prepare
Passport · Birth certificates (you, parent, UK-born grandparent for Ancestry) · CV / qualifications · Job offer (if Skilled Worker)
