UK Ancestry visa: can you move to Britain through a grandparent?

If a grandparent was born in the UK, this is often the easiest route for Australians.

Many Australians have a British grandparent and don't realise it's a golden ticket. The UK Ancestry visa is one of the most generous routes into Britain — and it doesn't need an employer.

Who qualifies

Broadly: you're a Commonwealth citizen (Australians qualify), aged 17+, can prove a grandparent was born in the UK (or in certain other defined circumstances), and you plan and are able to work in the UK.

Why it's so good

  • Five years of full work rights — employed or self-employed, no sponsor needed.
  • You can bring dependants.
  • It leads to settlement (indefinite leave to remain) after the five years.

Dig out birth certificates early — proving the chain (you → parent → UK-born grandparent) is the main hurdle, and original documents can take time to gather. Verify current rules at gov.uk.

If you don't have the ancestry

No UK-born grandparent? Under 31, the Youth Mobility scheme is a quick, flexible two-year option; otherwise a sponsored Skilled Worker visa is the standard route. The Health Surcharge applies to these.

Plan the money too

Once UK-resident you're taxed on worldwide income, and your Australian super stays in Australia. Budget the move (including the upfront Health Surcharge where it applies) with the estimator.

Frequently asked

Can Australians move to the UK through a grandparent?

Yes — if a grandparent was born in the UK, the UK Ancestry visa gives Commonwealth citizens (including Australians) five years of full work rights with no employer sponsor, and leads to settlement. You'll need to prove the family chain with birth certificates.

What if I don't have a UK-born grandparent?

Under 31 you can use the Youth Mobility scheme (a flexible two-year visa); otherwise the standard route is a sponsored Skilled Worker visa. Both involve the Immigration Health Surcharge.
